EdFringe 2014 production: Moodboard for 'Games of Love and Chance', adapted from Marivaux by David K Barnes

Games of Love and Chance is a comedy set in the 1920s. Two young aristocrats are engaged to be married before the end of the weekend. Sylvia and Roderick and rich, fashionable and good looking. The catch? They've never met before. In a bid to gain the upper hand and learn what their future spouse is truly like before the marriage takes place, they swap places with their servants, Edith and Charlie Quinn who relish the idea of sipping martinis while their employers mix the next round. The play features a live jazz band working with the cast to create background music and all sound effects. Games of Love and Chance is based on an 18th century original, which in turn finds its roots in the tradition of Commedia dell' Arte. Our concept for the publicity design is based on two motifs: chance and swapping sides/places. The overall aesthetic we wish to achieve is that of an art deco playing card - with a modern twist. A combination of character photography and intricate patterns, with a vintage feel, but a clear separation between subject and background. Ideally, the poster campaign would contain two different posters, Sylvia/Edith and Roderick/Charlie Quinn...
